Rabbi Emerita Myra Soifer served as Temple Sinai's rabbi for 25 years (from August 1984 through June 2009). Prior to coming to Reno, Rabbi Soifer served as the Assistant Rabbi at Temple Sinai in New Orleans, Louisiana. She was ordained in 1978, by the Hebrew Union College-Jewish Institute of Religion in Cincinnati, Ohio. Rabbi Soifer's activities at Temple Sinai in Reno included services of worship and life cycle, teaching, home and hospital visits, community lectures, and private counseling. She is the author of numerous published articles on a variety of Jewish topics.

Retired on June 30, 2009, Rabbi Soifer retains the title "Rabbi Emerita." She has been granted life-time membership at our Temple.

Rabbi Soifer also came back to Sinai for nine months (September 2012 through June 2013) and provided full rabbinic services during our search for a permanent rabbi. She re-entered retirement on June 30, 2013.

Just a Little “This and That”

First and foremost, my sincere thanks to all who attended the Nevada Prayer Breakfast or called with good wishes or otherwise celebrated the event and my receiving the Vision Award. Your support was appreciated more than I can say. You all are the reason it is a blessing to serve as this congregation’s Rabbi.

Oy vais mir! Can it actually be that today is already May???? Time is flying by . . . in just two months we will welcome Sinai’s rabbi, Ethan Bair! In the meantime, there is so much going on here!!

Please support our B’nai Mitzvah – four of which are coming up, starting with this weekend. All the particulars are listed in this eblast and on our website.

And don’t forget Shavuot. If our Shavuot study program is to take place, we must have reservations. And the study will be most meaningful if all have done the bit of advance reading that is available from Mike in our Temple office and online HERE. So if you’re planning to come, make those reservations and get the materials now. Shavuot is just two weeks away!

And other than that . . . Well, is this just about the loveliest weather you’ve ever seen? Or at least “ever seen” so far this year? Go out and enjoy the gorgeous examples of God’s creation that abound in our area. Baruch atah, Adonai Eloheinu, Melech haolam, shekachah lo b’olamo. Praise to you, Adonai our God, Sovereign of the universe, whose world is filled with beauty.

100+ Women Who Care in Washoe County

Written by // Rabbi Emerita Myra Soifer Categories // 2013 Posts

I recently learned about a really magnificent local tzedakah effort. 100+ Women Who Care in Washoe County is a group of local women, from all walks of life and different financial backgrounds, who care about our community. Their mission is to make a difference in our community through collective giving. Involvement in this group includes a commitment to four one-hour meetings, of less than an hour long, per year and a $100 pledge per meeting, for an annual total of $400. This financial pledge can also be met by 2-4 members, joining together as team. And, yes, men can be a part of this effort too. (I checked . . .!)

Members present worthy non-profits, for funding, at each of the quarterly meetings. The group then decides, by vote, on that quarter's recipient. All recipient groups will be 501(c)(3)s whose work serves our local area.

With 100 members, the quarterly contribution of this giving collective would be $10,000 – a wonderful sum to further the work of local non-profits. As the group is just beginning, there are now just 20 women who have committed to membership. My membership form has just been sent in. As the word gets out, the hope is that the numbers will grow easily to this 100+ goal and that this goal will be met by no later than the end of the year.

For a longer history of this idea/organization (which originated in 2006 with Karen Dunigan in Jackson, Michigan), for fuller details of its process and structure, for a list of upcoming meetings (the next one is May 9 at 7:00pm at the Tamarack Junction Meeting Rooms), and to download a membership form, go to

"Great is tzedakah, for since the day that the world was created until this day the world stands upon tzedakah"
– Midrash Tanna d'Vei Eliyahu Zutta 1.

Here's one more way to keep our world standing firm!
