A Jewish boy comes home from school and tells his mother he has a part in a play. She asks, “What part is it?” The boy says, “I play the part of the Jewish husband.” “The mother scowls and says, “Go back and tell the teacher you want a speaking part.”
Such is an example of Borscht belt humor. But is this the origin of Jewish comedy in America? Dr. Dennis Dworkin, UNR History Chair, will provide us with insights about this period of social history at our FIRST MEN’S CLUB BREAKFAST OF 2019 on Sunday, January 13th at 9:00 am.
As always, please RSVP at: https://sinaireno.org/mens-club/
In addition, we will have an “installation” of our new Men’s Club President, Ms. Suzanne Silverman. As that great Borscht Belt comedian is fond of saying, “An installation is not just for floor tiles” (Myra Soifer).
I also have a personal request for our participants to stay a few extra minutes to help set up for the Israeli High School Jazz performance later on Sunday at 3:00 pm. Please, RSVP at: www.sinaireno.org. Thank you, Barbara Weinberg, for putting this in motion.
Steve Myerson, Outgoing President
Suzanne Silverman, Incoming President
Ken & Marilyn, Co-Treasurers
Steve Weidman, Secretary
The Men’s Club is a self-funding group of men (primarily) who share breakfast while hearing speakers on secular and Jewish topics. The Men’s Club is open to men, women, and couples within the Jewish community of our Reno area. Dues are nominal and meetings include breakfast. Accumulated funds are typically used to support Temple Sinai initiatives. Meetings feature a variety of guest speakers.
