Story Titles: “War Zone” and “Written in the Bible”

There are many English speakers in Israel but few outlets for Israeli English fiction to be published. Ang-Lit Press has sought to remedy that by producing anthologies in which Israeli writers hone their art in today’s lingua franca.

Chicago-born and educated Muriel Moulton’s story “War Zone” tells of strife between neighbors. No bullets, no knives… but some very sharp tongues. This war has strategies and tactics too. It’s a tale of the inhabitants of one small apartment building… divided by wealth, class, race and temperament. Could this circumstance transpire anywhere or could it only happen in Israel? Yes and yes.

“Written in the Bible” isn’t what you think. There are no learned disputations here, no justifications of religious practices. Instead, UK-born author Shelley Goldman uses the Bible as a prop to ask: “what’s crucially important to us?”, “what do we most need to memorialize?” Are our beginnings more significant than our endings? Should people or events be the markers of our days? And if we don’t care what’s “written in the Bible” altogether… what are we?
